80’s Anime ‘Saber Rider & The Star Sheriffs’ Set For Licensed PC Engine & Sega Dreamcast Game

Saber-Rider-and-the-Star-Sherrifs-KickstarterIn 1984 animation gurus Studio Pierrot released a space-western styled anime which would go on to hit US audiences under the name Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. Although only lasting a year and fading into obscurity, the series is finally set to receive a video game adaptation 30 years later - one set for the Sega Dreamcast and PC Engine CD systems.

This bizarre occurrence and revival of an old anime is all taking place on Kickstarter via the newly formed Team Saber Rider. The group are currently seeking $75,000 in funding to create a brand new and licensed game which will play in the same style as Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug. Also due to arrive on Steam and the Nintendo 3DS, the upcoming game’s campaign shows some rather promising screenshots and stunning pixel-art mock-ups of what’s to come.

Pledges of $49 will secure a copy of the game on either the Sega Dreamcast or PC Engine CD, both of which coming in their own boxes with manuals. $99 on the other hand will clinch yourself a limited edition with the game’s soundtrack, a collectable Starsheriffs Badge, a Jesse Blue Wanted Poster, and your name in the game credits.

Yeah man! same here. Love both the american version and the Original Japanese version which I only recently saw for the first time. As long as they capture the spirit of games like contra and metal slug for the on foot sections and the feel of stuff like Gradius/R-Type/Darius etc for the mech sections this could be a great use of a liscence. "Power Stride and Ready to Ride!" :)
