3DNES Emulator Brings Nintendo’s 2D Classics Into The Third Dimension

3DNES-Emulator-Three-Dimensional-Nintendo-GamesLong before the likes of the Oculus Rift and even the Virtual Boy, video games were always developed for two dimensional play. While we’re perfectly happy with flat pixels, the arrival of Nintendo’s 3D Classics on the 3DS has left us wondering how many other titles would work with added depth. That’s all about to change following the recent development of a 3D Nintendo NES emulator.

Now before you get too excited and dream about discovering newfound corners of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda, the 3DNES emulator is very much a work in progress. Available for play through the web browser Firefox, 3DNES takes advantage of the way certain games are coded (in layers) and automatically positions them where it sees fit.

Although this has been developed around Super Mario Bros and produces some incredible visuals - all of which rotatable on the fly - there are some games such as Castlevania which currently struggle with overlapping objects. The developer behind the project geod at the TASVideos forum has been detailing his work and discussing his aim to have a handful of games optimised for play in 3D. Until then anyone wanting to give their favourite Nintendo NES ROMs a spin are able to do so online at the link below.

Neat idea - ugly results.

It'd be awesome if the web emulator actually worked, because I can't get it to do anything other than make Firefox hang.
