16-Bit Space Invaders Clone 'The First Invasion' Hits Sega Mega Drive Consoles

The-First-Invasion-Sega-Mega-Drive-HomebrewIf for whatever reason you didn't get round to celebrating the Sega Mega Drive's 25th anniversary yesterday, you've now got the perfect belated excuse. One talented homebrew developer has been hard at work to bring Taito's arcade classic Space Invaders over to the 16-bit system - unofficially - in The First Invasion.

This all new release is yet to be finished, however, retro-developer Psycatic Software has begun sharing his recent updates with the world in a downloadable ROM format. On the game's download page, the coder behind Psycatic Software has been detailing his desire to create a fully fledged and impressive Mega Drive homebrew, using Space Invaders as the perfect foundation to prepare and learn the ropes beforehand.

Although nothing is currently known about this future development, in the meantime we can all enjoy The First Invasion. This clone of Space Invaders not only offers the original game as we all remember, but also a recreation of the Atari 2600 port and more unique one playing to the Mega Drive's strengths. Furthermore, several new features have been implemented such as freeze-time bonuses which should add a bit more variety to the age old classic.

And last but not least, Psycatic Software has also noted that throughout development of this game, compatibility with the portable Mega Drive clones has been included - for those without Mega Everdrives wanting to sample this treat on original/re-released hardware.
