Audio Distortion Fix Arrives For Radica / AT Games Sega Mega Drive Plug ‘N’ Play Systems

Mega-Drive-Plug-N-Play-Audio-FixAlthough the arrival of brand new retro gaming systems seemed like a great idea at the time, the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis aftermarket consoles have been anything but decent. The most crippling aspect to these all-in-one systems is their horrific audio output, giving countless 16-bit classics an awful and unfamiliar tone. With a quick soldering job though these distortions can soon become a thing of the past.

Retro gaming enthusiast and YouTuber The 8-Bit Guy has recently been rounding up a selection of these plug ‘n’ play systems - including the Mega Drive / Genesis offering - ahead of an all new episode. When experimenting with the Radica / AT Games branded system, he decided to do some further research into the audio issues present and provide an easy to follow solution for those disgruntled with the outgoing sounds.

By simply removing two troublesome resistors on the console’s board and then bridging two connections with additional wires, it would appear that the sound output can be fixed within mere minutes. Within this quick video tutorial is a short clip of the difference it makes, potentially bringing the audio quality back to what we know and love. That said you’ll need some soldering experience to pull this off, especially due to how small the plug ‘n’ play system’s board is. Keep in mind too that the actual layout of your system's board may vary, so check before proceeding.
