Stepping aside from our usual duties of playing classic games and archiving them in our expansive database, we decided to catch up with a certain gamer who assumes the role of our favourite characters. Linky Lex, a well known cosplayer for her appearances dressed up as The Legend Of Zelda's Link sat down to discuss the enthralling world of cosplay.
Those of you who attended Replay Expo 2011 should already be familiar with our Hyrule hero. Linky Lex made a prominent appearance at the event last year, appearing on stage during the Cosplay competition. Whilst Linky Lex may not have conquered the competition at Replay Expo, she has since moved forward to represent RetroCollect as our very own 'Link' to the past.
Interview with Linky Lex
RetroCollect's Katsu: Why Cosplay?
Linky Lex: Well, I decided I wanted to cosplay after I'd seen other people doing. I didn't know it existed before then, but it looked cool and I really wanted to try it.
RC's K: What / who was your 1st Cosplay?
Linky Lex: Link from Twilight Princess.
RC's K: Why Link?
Linky Lex: He's my favourite character, and at the time I was playing Twilight Princess, so it made sense to cosplay that version.
RC's K: Which other characters have you cosplayed as?
Linky Lex: I've also cosplayed Saria, SS Zelda, SeeU (Vocaloid), Toon Link and Pichu.
RC's K: A Pichu outfit huh, who is your favorite Pokémon?
Linky Lex: It's always hard to choose faves, but I guess I'd say Lugia.
RC's K: Do you have any characters/events you are working on this year?
Linky Lex: Yeah, I've got quite a few plans for the year. Right now I'm working on Alice from Pandora Hearts for London MCM in Oct and Thought Bubble in Nov as well ask re-making my TP Link and SS Zelda for MCM. I'm also making the costumes for a Four Sword/Toon Zelda group my friends and I are doing at Manchester MCM in July. Then I'll hopefully also be doing Yuna and/or Valefor from FFX for Play Expo, also in Oct.
RC's K: Someone is going to be busy! What is the most extravagant cosplay you have seen 1st hand?
Linky Lex: I am! Gosh, I've seen so many, but I'm not sure what characters they are, or who the cosplayers are to be able to tell you, sorry! I know a few by friends, but I've not yet seen them in person.
RC's K: Which Cosplay did you rate the highest at Replay last year?
Linky Lex: I loved Helen's Wolf Link, but they were all amazing!
RC's K: Yeah that Wolf Link costume was insane!
Linky Lex: I know! I'd not played it then though, so I didn't know who she was and wasn't it?! All her costumes are top notch, it's unbelievable what she comes out with XD
RC's K: Did you take part in the Cosplay talk at Replay Expo last year?
Linky Lex: Yeah, me, Kai and Vicki ran a panel on the Sunday. For a first time thing it went better than we'd expected. The Q & A bit was better than the talk though! XD The plans changed last minute which threw the actual talk off a bit.
RC's K: Do you think all of the RetroCollect Squad should Cosplay at this years Replay Expo?
Linky Lex: Yeah!
RC's K: Best we get our game on! Tell us a little about your gaming experience?
Linky Lex: I wouldn't say I'm the most dedicated of gamers, but I spent a majority of my childhood on Mario and racing/shooting games with my dad and then my high school years away in my bedroom on others. I've always found it preferable to going out, much to the annoyance of my mum, ahah! Since going onto college I've slacked off a bit, and don't play as often, but I still disappear for a few days when I manage to get hold of a new game.
RC's K: We are going to hazard a guess you are a Zelda fan? Would that be a fair comment?
Linky Lex: Of course!
RC's K: Finally, How does it feel to be RetroCollects first official game character?
Linky Lex: Ah good! And it's exciting, makes me feel like I might actually be Link, haha.
