Fifteen Years of Frustration from the Missing Resident Evil 1.5 Prototype

Fifteen-Years-of-Frustration-from-the-Missing-Resident-Evil-1-5-PrototypeFifteen years ago the much anticipated follow up to the survival horror hit Resident Evil was in development at Capcom. However as the release date drew closer, quality control pulled the plug and development started once again. Although cancelled, countless images and video footage have surfaced of this scrapped game, yet it remains M.I.A.

What makes the cancelled version of Resident Evil 2 (more commonly known as Resident Evil 1.5) so interesting is the continued battle fan communities are fighting to piece together the missing pieces. With countless images and video clips submitted to the media in 1996, there remains a treasure trove of information out there amongst the magazines and press releases.

As far as prototypes and unreleased games go, plenty of thought-to-be-lost titles have begun to surface over the years (as the regular RetroCollect news would suggest!) yet Resident Evil 1.5 remains in a league of its own. While it has remained out of reach from gamers and Resident Evil fans for fifteen years, the constant flow of new gameplay footage in high quality suggests that someone out there has a working copy in their possession.

The majority of this footage has surfaced from none other than the PlayStation Museum, which in turn has lead many to believe the webmaster has a working copy of the game. While you wouldn't be too far off in coming to the same conclusion, the webmaster has stated he is not in possession of the game:

The PlayStation Museum is not in possession of the game and only seeks to preserve the history of the title through screenshots and video. (Source - Video Description)

To recognise this painful wait with no reward in sight, the PlayStation Museum recently released a promotional teaser video using archived footage, offering little indication as to what the teaser actually is for. Their last video on Resident Evil 1.5 however gives the most in depth look at the survival horror journey we could have been enjoying in 1997.

Will we ever get to play the missing link in the Resident Evil series? Only time will tell...

This is the ONE game I want to play when it comes to prototypes. I've seen so many photos and videos, and yet I still cant believe no-one out there will release it!

Maybe it will be released by Capcom when they run out of ideas to re-release old RE games :P

I think looking at this prototype over the years and seeing all the images I can't for the life of me understand why Capcom scrapped it?

The monsters & zombies look much better, so does the actual background. I think it's just a matter of time before this is leaked somewhere! :-)

Some of the locations in this look very familiar and made it into the actual Resident Evil 2 game!

Is thinking I may dig out Resi 2 in a bit and have a playthrough just to check the game! I've got it on DC!

I wish this game was released as a bonus for RE fans during an Anniversary or something. The project was BRILLIANT!

I remember reading about this being a long lost prototype and reading info about someone that snagged a copy of it. It was a really solid read, and made me want to know more about the RE that could've been.
