Discussion: The Games We Just Can't Beat...

The-Games-We-Just-Cant-BeatAs gamers we've all played the hero countless times and defeated many enemies. We've gone on adventures to rescue a princess or to save a kingdom. But there's always one nemesis that the hero has trouble defeating. No matter how many times he gets hit the enemy just laughs in our face. The enemy i'm talking about is that game we struggled to beat back in the day.

We've all got that game from childhood which frustrated us to the point of violence and destruction. It followed us into adulthood cruelly taunting us. That game for you may be something another person finds simple and easily beatable but for you it just mocks you with hateful derision. When someone else finds that game easily beatable, well that just makes you feel fine and dandy inside doesn’t it? No! It’s just another form of ridicule the game thrusts upon you.

There’s no escaping the mockery. Everywhere you turn you see this game. Even in the #52GameChallenge, where you thought it would be fun to partake, pokes fun at your failures. Each completed screen is another knife to the heart. Maybe now is the time to show that game you aren’t scared anymore. You won’t run at the first hint of death. You’ll stand your ground until that game is beaten.

That game for me is Fortress of Fear on the original Game Boy. Many sleepless nights were spent with this game as a child. I just couldn’t get past the third level never mind fail at the end. A while back myself and two friends were talking about the game and all three of us tried to beat it and better the others high score. Needless to say I was the only one who couldn’t defeat it. The other two completed it within a couple of days. After weeks of failed attempts the game was quickly torn from my Game Boy and sent sprawling across the room. Luckily my adult self never resorted to the head butts my Game Boy received back in the day, but I was very close on a number of occasions. I haven’t touched it since. I’m getting the itch to try again and finally get the monkey off my back.

What’s your gaming nemesis and do you have the courage to challenge it one final time?

Fortress of Fear? That is in fact one of the first games I got as a kid, and I beat it the same month. I loved finding the treasures and extra lives. It is the game that learned me to memorize boss patterns. :)

My Nemesis on NES would be the correctly named "Mission Impossible". Only NES game I owned and couldn't finish as a kid. I finished all Gameboy titles I owned as a kid. For Gameboy I guess it's the obscure titles like Stop that Roach and Castle Quest I will never finish as I cannot work out how to play the game...

I didn't finish a lot of games back in the day. On memorable game that gave me trouble was Phantasy Star. I got about 2/3 of the way in and had to find the mirror shield on this small island. I spent what must have been days trying to find it, it simply wasn't there. Neither by foot or by landcrawler. I gave up and this was about 1989. In 2008 I got the game again and in 2009 I finally managed to find it. I duly finished the game, 20 years after first playing it.

Another game which I finally beat was Skooldaze on thecZX Spectrum. First played in 1985, finished 2007. Still working on The Great Escape!

Castlevania: The Adventure... I have tried to cover that game 4 times on the channel but man, it's serious sodding hard! I can get to the auto-scrolling section and I just can't hack it haha

Rygar on NES - bloody last boss is impossible. I think the trick is to have all the power-ups on arrival and hope for the best but if you die and have to start outside the boss room with no powers ups you may as well turn the machine off and start again :(

Has anyone ever beat Turok Rage Wars for Nintendo 64 I heard that this game had only a handful of people beat it. I personally think it is beatable and could not figure out when I read that few had ever beaten it. I got stuck on the first boss, but I am not a gaming guru and I heard what everyone else said about it and never wanted to get further on it. I am guessing it was the difficult controls that had most players stubbed.
